Largo Argentina’s Area Sacra, or sacred area, is one of the most stunning archaeological sites in Rome. Don’t miss this place of immense cultural value during your stay in the Italian capital.
Opened on 21 April 1929 by Mussolini, Largo Argentina contains the remains of four temples dating back to between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC: one dedicated to the goddess Feronia, the second to Juturna, the third to Lares Permarini, and the last to Fortuna huiusce diei (“the Fortune of This Day“). In around 1132, a church in honour of St Nicholas was founded within the structure.
The name “Argentina” comes from “Argentoratum“, the ancient name of the city of Strasbourg, the hometown of Johann Burchard, master of ceremonies to Pope Alexander VI. In fact it was he who gave the name “Argentina” to the tower on his palace on Via del Sudario.
Following careful renovation, the Area Sacra has been open to the public since 2023, and a new walkway has been inaugurated that allows you to admire the existing ruins up-close: there is also a small museum exhibiting a selection of the many finds discovered during the demolitions and excavations that took place in the Fascist period.
This journey through time will take you back to Republican Rome, to the place where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC, to appreciate the truly authentic aspects of a cultural legacy that can still be seen today in this fascinating open-air museum.
